Summary

Luxury Trains Vietnam: Traveling Through the Indochine Heritage in Comfort

The luxury trains of Vietnam can be described as boutique hotels on rails: itineraries taking 4 to 8 days with accommodation, exquisite food and guided tours combined into one fare. It means that luxury train travel in Vietnam allows converting historical railroads into travel adventures where the trip itself becomes the destination.

The heritage is amazing. The essence of the Vietnamese rail network is the North-South Railway or Reunification Express. The railway was built in 1881 under French colonial ambitions and eventually completed as a full route in 1936 as part of the Trans-Indochinois project. The Reunification Express spans 1,726 kilometres across Vietnam, linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In the course of decades of conflict, the Indochina wars and the Vietnam War, various sections of the railway were heavily damaged, including bridges, tunnels and train stations. Post-reunification in 1975, restoration works culminated on 31 December 1976 with the final opening of the full main line as a symbolic act in the history of the country.

The SJourney is the first full-length luxury sleeper train in Vietnam, offering extraordinary train journeys across the entire length of the country in Indochine style, combining French colonial elegance with Vietnamese design elements. Vietnam does not have many ultra-luxury trains like Europe or India, but SJourney occupies a unique niche. Luxury trains in Vietnam give guests luxury hospitality akin to top resort experiences.

Why rail versus driving or flying? Landscape rolls outside of panoramic windows while you indulge in regional cuisine. The hotel is travelling with you so you don't need to unpack. The train moves at 50 to 80 km/h, allowing views of rice fields, forested mountains, virgin beaches and other landscapes that air travel simply eliminates. Up to 60 guests on board SJourney make the journey feel closer to private tours than group travel.

At The Luxury Train Travel Company, we provide expert booking services for Vietnamese luxury rail, assisting travellers with choosing the right cabin, route and departure date.

Vietnam Railways operates over 20 trains daily on the Reunification Express, serving as a baseline alternative for travellers. The journey takes over 32 hours to complete and the route has over 20 stops. In Vietnam's trains there are four classes of seats and sleeping: Hard Seat is the cheapest and sparsest class available; Soft Seat provides comfortable, air-conditioned seats for daytime journeys; 6-Bed Sleeper compartments offer comfortable sleeping arrangements; and 4-Bed Sleeper is the most comfortable class offering private cabins. These regular services provide an authentic train ride through the countryside, but they are worlds apart from the luxury experience offered by SJourney.

When to go

When to travel on Vietnamese luxury trains

October to December
High season. The dry season starts in most of the country, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies for both the train journey and off-train excursions. Central Vietnam exits the typhoon area, with pleasant conditions.
January to March
The cool and dry season, great for both the northern mountains and southern regions. In northern Vietnam it can be cold with possible fog, providing great views on the journey through the mountainous forested countryside.
April to September
The monsoon season brings high humidity, rain and even storms in central Vietnam. Luxury train itineraries can restrict departures in this season. Some travellers like the lush, green scenery, but excursions can be affected by weather.

Booking

Book Vietnamese Luxury Train Journeys with LTTC
