Luxury Trains Spain: Luxurious Spanish Railway Journeys

Three heritage trains, 6 to 8 unhurried days, and a rolling boutique hotel that carries you from Andalusian palaces to the Atlantic north.

  • Al Ándalus
  • El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo
  • Costa Verde Express

Overview

Luxury Trains Spain: An Enchanting Journey Through Iberian Landscapes

Spain's luxury tourist trains are rolling boutique hotels: slow, immersive itineraries that unfold across six to eight days, with accommodation, dining and guided excursions woven into a single fare.

The heritage runs deep. The rolling stock behind the Al Ándalus was built in the 1920s for service between Calais and the French Riviera, and its Belle Époque salons still carry that charm. The Transcantábrico, inaugurated in 1983, was Spain's first passenger-hotel train and opened the northern coast to a new kind of rail holiday.

The Tren Al Ándalus crosses Andalusia and Extremadura over 7 days before arriving in Madrid. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo runs 8 days between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. The Costa Verde Express covers the north coast in 6 days.

Why rail over driving or flying? Landscape through panoramic windows while you dine on regional cuisine, a hotel that moves with you so you never repack, and expert-guided excursions. With 28 to 64 guests aboard, it feels closer to a private tour than a group holiday.

Northern table

El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo turns to Basque cheeses, Asturian cider, Galician pulpo á feira and Cantabrian anchovies, with Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Albariño poured alongside. Costa Verde Express follows the same coast in a shorter format.

The all-inclusive fare covers premium wines, spirits, soft drinks, coffees and teas. Breakfast is buffet and à la carte, lunches alternate between the restaurant car and selected restaurants ashore, dinners are formal multi-course affairs. Dietary requirements are accommodated with advance notice.
